Is it possible for a Cancer woman and Pisces man to move on?

I am a Cancer woman and I dated a Pisces man. We were only together for a few months, but I really felt like I had found my soul mate. He did too. We had our little disagreements, but we were so in love. And still are to this day. Long story short, I got pregnant. Our initial plan was to get engaged and move in together and have our own happy family. But his drinking problems began to surface, and being a Pisces, he would rather slip into a dream world than to face the reality of having a child at such a young age (we're both 21). I couldn't handle him going out to bars and drinking excessively every night so I broke up with him. Part of me wonders if I should have stuck it out just a little longer. I now have decided to give my son up for adoption because I want the very best for him. My ex and I started talking again recently and expressed how much we are still in love with each other. He moved away to a different state, is going to AA and really sounds like he's getting his life together. I'm so proud of him. It made me so happy, but the reality hit me that we could never really get back together, because of certain circumstances. I'm afraid I'll always be in love with him and will never be able to move on. I'm not ready to move on any time soon, but eventually?? What if he really was my soul mate, and I spend the rest of my life just settling for the next best thing? I need someone's advice who's preferably been in a Pisces/Cancer relationship, but any advice would do. Thank you!!
